Home Air Duct Cleaning Made Simple

Clean air ductsOver time, your home’s air duct system accumulates large concentrations of dirt, dust, dander and other forms of debris. This collection of contaminants and allergens not only interferes with the efficiency of your HVAC system, but also exposes you and your family to poor air quality and affiliated health risks. This means that your air ducts will have to eventually be cleaned. You should always trust the cleaning of your air ducts to a professional, however, there are some steps you can take to ensure your cleaning experience is seamless and safe for both the contractor and your family.

First, be sure to clear an unobstructed path from your HVAC system to the nearest exterior door. This includes moving any obstacles out of the way that may be positioned within six feet of your unit. Also, be sure to keep your children and pets out of the area where the cleaning will be taking place, as the process can be noisy.

For your home in general, remove any potential obstructions that will prevent the contractors from accessing the supply vents in all of the rooms. This includes relocating large pieces of furniture such as beds, entertainment units, pianos and dressers that may make it difficult for service personnel to access your complete HVAC system. Removing the furniture will not only ensure that the job is done more efficiently, but professional cleaners are not typically authorized to move such items, as well.

To maximize your cleaning experience, you should put together a list of concerns and questions you have related to residential duct cleaning. Reputable contractors, like ourselves, will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have, such as what will happen during the cleaning, and what precautions you should take during this time. For example, if you schedule a winter cleaning appointment, you’ll likely need to dress in layers during the service call as the interior temperature of your home will drop, given that the heating system will be turned off to complete the cleaning.

Following your service call, you may notice a burn-off odour when you turn your HVAC system back on. This is normal, temporary and isn’t reason for alarm. Additionally, be sure to check your vents and settings to ensure they have been returned to pre-cleaning levels.

For the health of your family and the sake of your HVAC system, you should have your ducts professionally cleaned once a year. Ready to get started? Call us for a free estimate: 306-222-3478.
